On a journey to share my escape into the bliss, we start with my long-awaited flight. Ah, how I miss the feeling of taking off and touching down in different countries… After what will be a very hectic 1st quarter, this is for sure a perfect way to shut down and recharge. Are you ready to take on the journey of planning to South Korea with me?
My First Trip of 2025: SOUTH KOREA
South Korea is a destination I hold close to my heart as a Korean. This trip is all about reconnecting with my roots, indulging in wellness and beauty, and exploring the vibrant food scene. I’ll be spending a week traveling between Seoul and Busan, and I’m thrilled to share my itinerary, travel tips, and packing recommendations with you. Whether planning your first trip to South Korea or looking for inspiration for your next visit, I hope this post helps you escape into the bliss of travel.
Day 1: Arrival in Seoul, Settle in, and Start the Night
I have mixed feelings about two things: overnight flights and traveling to see cherry blossoms. Overnight flights because I can never sleep comfortably in an upright position no matter how much I try, cherry blossoms because you can never know exactly when the blossom. Last year, I was too early see them blossom but saw them as I head my way to the airport back home – tragic, I know.
This time round, my friends and I managed to book a whopping 8AM flight via Singapore Airlines, which will be my first-ever SIA flight to Korea (usually I am a Korean Airlines girl). This might mean lesser time to explore Korea as compared to an overnight flight at 12-1AM, but I think it’s a perfect time to reach Korea, travel to Seoul which takes approximately an hour, and checking in seamlessly without having to wait for the check-in time of (the usual) 3PM. If you’ve decided an overnight flight and reaching at dawn, make sure to request for an early check in!
First order of business, check into our accommodation and settle in – but not taking too long. Whether you choose a chic boutique hotel or a cosy Airbnb, finding a spot near public transport is key to getting around the city efficiently. In a blink of an eye in the evening, we plan to start our first night with an amazing dinner and drinks, soaking in the vibrant nightlife that Seoul is known for.
Spring Tip:
- Late April in Seoul means mild weather and a chance to see the last of the cherry blossoms. Pack a light jacket for cool evenings.
Travel Tip:
- For a smooth airport transfer without spending too much, consider taking the airport limousine bus or Korea’s Airport Railroad (AREX). Both are convenient and offer a relaxing ride into the city.
- Make sure to request for an early check-in as soon as possible if you’re expecting to arrive earlier than the official check-in time.
- I love getting my SIM card from LG, a small booth upon exiting the arrival hall. They have pretty good unlimited data plans, and fun fact, the SIM card holder also acts as a transportation card, which I use for my rides via trains/buses/cabs throughout the trip.
Day 2: Scalp Wellness & Really, Really Good Food at Ikseondong
We are kicking things up with two things: scalp health and amazing food:
Wellness: A scalp treatment at Eco Jardin, a wellness experience I’m particularly excited about. I’ve tried it once last year due to many great reviews and I was not disappointed. Eco Jardin offers two scalp treatment services: 15- and 18-step treatments, and I’ve loved every single second on the comfy chair getting that princess treatment my scalp really needed. I cannot wait to bring my friends there – truly a must-go and a big highlight for my first trip of 2025.
Dining: Post-scalp treatment, we move on to Ikseondong, one of Seoul’s most charming neighbourhoods, which has garnered great attention on TikTok for its quaint cafes, boutiques, and a touch of old-world charm. This area is perfect for leisurely strolling, and photo spots with Korean traditional houses (hanok). Not a stranger to this little neighbourhood, but I’m still always looking forward to trying the famous salt bread, various dining outlets and exploring local shops. Ikseonchihyang is definitely a good for lunch, with its menu of beautiful pastas and and refreshing ades, before setting out a walking tour around the area.
Dinner and drinks will take me to either Gangnam or Hongdae, both lively districts offering endless dining and entertainment options. From traditional Korean barbecue to trendy cocktail bars, there’s something for everyone. My current favourite is ART MONSTER, a lively place that serves up the best craft beers I’ve had at affordable prices. If you’re indecisive or wish to explore more of their selections, try the beer flight option – that never goes wrong.
Spring Tip:
- Dress in layers to stay comfortable as temperatures can fluctuate throughout the day.
Travel Tip:
- Use apps like KakaoMetro and Naver Map for seamless navigation through Seoul’s efficient subway system.
- Keep a look out for photo spots – the interior of the many cafes are jaw-dropping!
Day 3: From Seoul to Busan
Busan is a refreshing change from the hustle and bustle of Seoul city. It has gorgeous beaches and view points, beautiful villages, as well as not-to-be-missed fresh seafood and Korean BBQ to fill your tummy. Overnight trips are great, but this time round due to trip being a rather short one, we’ve decided on a relaxing day trip. But, it’s always great to consider a dedicated Busan stay to soak in, especially if you’re looking for somewhere less hectic.
We are catching an early 8AM KTX train to make the most out of the day trip. The high-speed train is not only fast but also offers scenic views along the way – great to take some videos if you’re still awake. The ride takes about 2.5 hours, so keep in mind to maybe shop for a simple meal or snack to devour during your train ride.
First thing first upon touch down will be the eye-popping Gamcheon Culture Village. A part of most Busan tours, this colourful village is a feast for the eyes with its vibrant murals and artistic installations. Many go up to take photos with The Little Prince statue on top of the village. A fun thing you can do is this stamping activity. At the tourist information centre, you can get the map of the village which consist of a space for stamps – stamps you can walk around the village to find. Again, this is a pretty big village, so we are most probably going to spend much time there before… SHOPPING!
Fret not if you wish to shop as Busan also offers the luxurious Lotte and Shinsegae department stores for some shopping and lunch. These iconic shopping destinations are perfect for both luxury and local finds.
Ending the seemingly hectic day with a good Korean BBQ at Hanyang Hwaro, a highly-recommended spot by Elisa, my dearest friend. It’s definitely the perfect way to wind down after a day of travel and exploration before heading back to Seoul.
Spring Tip:
- It might still be a little chilly but you might wish to explore the beaches while you’re in Busan.
- Comfortable walking shoes are a must, especially for exploring hilly areas like Gamcheon.
Travel Tip:
- Don’t miss trying local street food like hotteok (sweet pancakes) while exploring Busan.
- Book your KTX tickets in advance for better seat options and savings, and don’t be late as the train tend to leave on the dot.
- Shop ahead and bring along some snacks that you can have during the 2.5 hour ride.
Day 4: Free & Easy
A free & easy day is important for a group trip to ensure everyone has fulfilled whatever they want to do in Korea. As for me, I am taking this day to do a profile shot at the famed Octobee Studio, which takes many celebrities and currently rising in fame on TikTok for their professionalism and beautifully edited photos. There are a few concepts you can choose from and the studio will recommend a variety of hair and makeup studios to visit before the shoot so it’s pretty convenient. But, expect spending quite a bit for the shoot and they require a reservation deposit upfront via PayPal. Nevertheless, I can’t wait for this photoshoot!
Day 5: We Want That Princess Treatment
You cannot miss dressing up in the traditional Korean costumes (hanbok) and walk around the palace, taking photos and imagining a life of a princess. There are incredibly many stores that rents out hanboks so you can take all the time you need to explore the different stores and the costumes they offer before choosing one and donning the beautiful colours and patterns. There are free pouches to select from and the staff can help with various hairdos to match your outfit at an additional cost as well – good options to complete the look!
Seoul is a shopping paradise with streets out independent outlets as well as luxurious department stores. Whatever your budget is, Korea has it covered with high quality materials paired with major stylish designs. There’s a reason Koreans are known for their fashion styles – you can be part of the crowd! I foresee my friends going crazy over their favourite brands in the department stores; will I be part of the club? We’ll see.
Travel Trip:
- Entrance to the palace is free if you have a hanbok on, and it’s much better for photos, so do consider renting a costume.
- Myeongdong and Hongdae is a great start for tourists but if you’ve been there many times and want something different, you can consider Namdaemun for shopping.
Day 6: It’s All About Beauty and Wellness
When you go to Korea, especially for the skincare lovers, you have to dedicate a day for beauty. First stop in the morning, we have booked an appointment with JUNO Hair, a salon very well known amongst tourists for mad skills and the ability to converse in English.
Next, what you might have been waiting for… SKIN CARE! Since my first skin procedure last year, I have fallen in love with how seamless and effective the treatments were and understood why many go back to Korea for more procedures. Elisa and I are avid lovers of skin treatments and now, we are bringing Lynn who has never tried it – so exciting! After some research, we’ve decided to go for the default best in the business, LienJang: a clinic renowned for its effective and luxurious treatments. Whatever concerns you have, tell your consultant to get some recommendations and enjoy the ride. Just remember: BEAUTY IS PAIN. So true!
Spring Tip:
- Carry a compact umbrella, as spring showers are common during this time of year.
Travel Tip:
- Schedule skin treatments before your shopping spree to avoid wearing makeup that might interfere with the session.
- It’s alright if you’re unsure of which procedure you’d like to do as there are friendly consultants that will recommend based on your concerns.
Day 7: Heading Home
After a blissful week, it’s time to head back to Singapore.
